TIGER YALTANGKI is an exciting contemporary Indigenous artist from Indulkana in the Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara (APY) Lands, in the far north of South Australia. Yaltangki’s bold, bright and often wild canvases are immediately striking - a compelling blend of the artist’s depiction of the Pitjantjatjara Mamu (supernatural spirits), and his enthusiasm for rock and roll music including Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd and Credence Clearwater Revival, and science fiction television, including Doctor Who and The Mighty Boosh. Yaltangki’s play with both Indigenous and popular mythologies has developed into a unique visual language that has sparked both critical and commercial interest nationally and abroad.
Tiger Yaltangki has been featured in several significant exhibitions in recent years including at TARNANTHI - Festival of Contemporary Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art 2015 at the Art Gallery of South Australia, Adelaide; in the 2016 Adelaide Biennial – Magic Object exhibition at the Art Gallery of South Australia, Adelaide; and in Darkness on the Edge of Town at Artbank, Sydney, curated by Clothilde Bullen.
Tiger Yaltangki is one of nine artists selected for the inaugural edition of The National: New Australian Art, opening 30 March 2017 at the Art Gallery of New South Wales, Carriageworks and the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. A major exhibition partnership between three of Sydney’s premier cultural institutions, The National: New Australian Art is a six-year initiative presenting the latest ideas and forms in contemporary Australian art over three editions in 2017, 2019 and 2021. Yaltangki’s work will be presented at the Art Gallery of New South Wales.
In 2018 Tiger Yaltangki was selected as a finalist for the prestigious 35th Telstra National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Awards at the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory, Darwin and the Paul Guest Prize at the Bendigo Art Gallery, Bendigo. In 2018 Yaltangki’s work featured in the major exhibition A Lightness of Spirit is the Measure of Happiness at Australian Centre for Contemporary Art (ACCA), Melbourne. Curated by Hannah Presley, A Lightness of Spirit is the Measure of Happiness is the inaugural exhibition for Yalingwa, a Victorian Government initiative. Yalingwa is a partnership between Creative Victoria, ACCA and TarraWarra Museum of Art, designed to support the development of outstanding contemporary Indigenous art and curatorial practice.
In 2020 Tiger Yaltangki was announced as a finalist in the prestigious 35th Telstra National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Awards at the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory, Darwin.
